Dirty Dozen Portugal

Be one of the “Dirty Dozen”

This “Dirty Dozen” adventure has been born out of us doing 5 years of reccy trips for the Tour of Portugal rally.

We have had such a great time exploring, riding numerous trails, visiting great hotels, bars and cafes that we thought other adventure riders would want to experience this fantastic country and enjoy the routes and riding we have already ridden on bigger bikes.

The “dirty” bit suggests we are going to ride on some trails and get a little dusty and dirty.

We look forward to this adventure so much as we have a great time riding in this area and we can’t wait to go with you – you’ll love it

For “adventurous” riders

This is all about “adventure” riding and adventure riders. The type of bike should be 600cc or above and fitting with dual sport tyres so we can provide you with the best riding experience – you will not be disappointed.

We have 3 guides to a group, so on each ride we can have three different levels of riding, or if one group wants to take a break, this is possible, so everyone is guaranteed a great time. We can even cater for riders who wish to bring a pillion along.

The riding per day is approximately 250 – 300kms per day using scenic roads and easy going off road tracks.

 Intinerary

You will fly in Porto airport and then onto our first luxury hotel, either by prearranged transport or by hire car.

The first hotel is about an hour and fifteen minutes away and is an easy drive. It is a luxury hotel and your bike will be waiting for you at the hotel ready to roll the next day.

Day 1
After, an evening by the pool, relaxing in the “surf bar” we are ready to roll on the first days riding. We leave the hotel near the coast and head into the mountains, along the way we take in some back trails past rice fields and castles which are on our route.

We head close to the town of Coimbra and we may event take a pit stop in this beautiful university town.

Once we leave Coimbra, we are really heading into the mountains on superb twisty back roads which are a joy to ride, with very little traffic so you really feel like you are getting away from it all.

The roads and trails get better and better as we head into the remote central region of Portugal on our way to the second luxury hotel – this is the Villa Pampilhosa, and it is the hotel we use for Rally HQ for the Tour of Portugal Rally. The hotel has a spa centre and pool for you to relax in after your days ride and a super restaurant where you will meet Flavio, the head chef, when we have dinner.

Day 2
This is the big day and we ride through the most spectacular scenery, we head north east and into the national parks and into Portugal’s highest mountain range. We start off with some awesome trails out to the local villages taking some of the route on the Tour of Portugal then we progress to some awesome tarmac roads which are smooth and twisty and lead us to our lunch stop, a fantastic restaurant with it’s own private waterfall.

We push on into the Estrella mountains, high up above the snow line, marker posts along side the road show this is an area that is snow bound in winter. The views are among the best in Portugal, the roads are deserted and perfect.

Our route back down off the mountains takes us on numerous trails and back roads until we reach our afternoon break point, a hotel high up on the cliffs, where we take a well earned break and relaxing drink!

On the way back to the Villa Pampilhosa, we criss-cross the area using trails and roads, there is an option of another rest point on the way back but we have to see how we are doing for time.

We dine back at the Villa Pampilhosa Hotel and enjoy a nice gin and tonic or a “wee dram” after a big day out on the bikes.

Day 3
We have a relaxed start time on day 3 and we are heading back down to Surf Hotel, via tracks and back roads, cafes and bars. We will take in some beaches and if you wish you can have a go at sand riding, We take in Figueira da Foz and experience a special “seafood banquet” before heading back to the hotel for a relax and a swim before an alfresco style barbeque dinner.

You can ride your own bike or use one of the BMW 1200 GS hire bikes – just let us know which option you would like.
